"Magic Happens" is a solid, proven ocean cruising catamaran, fitted with extensive safety gear and equipment designed for extended offshore sailing. The focus in her layout and fittings has been on simplicity and reliability of systems and to this end only the best equipment has been installed. Well maintained and loved by her owners, Jono Goss and Yonna Powell, she has hosted Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions since June 2002.

Her specifications are:

  • 40ft Hitchhiker MkIII Catamaran (12.2m x 7.7m x 1m draft)
  • Designed John Hitch and John Glennie 1985.
  • Built by Rex Womersley, Cairns. Launched in 1991.
  • Epoxy and glass over West system ply construction.
  • 50 foot aluminium mast with stainless steel rigging.
  • 2 x 180 litre aluminium baffled freshwater tanks (as minikeels -able to be sat upon.)
  • Qld Design Displacement (kg) 7500

Safety systems on board include:
  • Regulation safety equipment plus calamity pack and separate emergency drinking water supplies.
  • Emergency flotation - 6 person RFD Life raft and type 1 PFD's for all on board.
  • Communications - mobile telephones, UHF, VHF and HF radios.
  • Emergency Signalling - EPIRBS x 2 including 406MHz.
  • Anchors: Manson Plough 60lb with 50m 8mm galvanised chain. Secondary bow anchor stainless steel Danforth, stern anchor Fortress FX16 alloy Danforth.
  • Motors: Yamaha 9.9HP 4 stroke outboards with 2 x 80 litre fuel tanks plus reserves.
  • Fire extinguishers and blanket. Fuel and gas bottles are stored safely.
  • Furuno 1621 Mark-2 Radar (1999).
  • Tiller steered with Autohelm GT4000Plus 2001.
  • Stainless steel tube lifelines and portable deck lines.
  • Paranchors sea anchor and smaller stern drogues.
  • Manual and electric bilge pumps.
  • Extensive first aid kits.
Rigged as a masthead sloop:

- Jib (hanked, triple stiched North sail)
- Working jib, (hanked)
- Storm jib (hanked, triple stitched Cowan UK)
- Mainsail (fully battened (2005)
- Spinnaker

"Magic Happens" is self sufficient for electrical power. This system includes:

  • Aerogen LVM 412 Aero4gen wind generator (1998).
  • Air Marine V1.9 wind generator (1997 with 2000 regulator and blades).
  • Kyoecera KC120W Solar panel x 2 (1998).
  • Photostar-30 Photovoltaic controller.
  • Trojan 225AH deep cycle batteries x 6.
For your comfort and enjoyment, we also have on board:
  • Danfoss 70 litre fridge.
  • Marine gas oven and stove top in fully equipped galley.
  • Shade setup while at anchor.
  • Central drop down swim ladder and platform.
  • Mirror sailing Dinghy (also used as a tender with 2 hp outboard).
  • Perception Swing sit-on-top kayak.
  • Assorted masks, snorkels and fishing gear.
  • 10 stack CD player and radio.
  • DVD player and laptop computer.
